�The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) announced the honour of 12 grants totaling more than $16 jillion over iII years to support suicide prevention efforts undertaken by tribes/tribal organizations.
This cary Grant program is authorized under the Garrett Lee Smith Memorial Act, which provides funding for programs to combat suicide.
SAMHSA Deputy Administrator Eric Broderick, D.D.S., M.P.H., made the announcement at the Interdepartmental Tribal Justice, Safety and Wellness Government-to-Government Consultation, Training and Technical Assistance Session in Billings, Mont.
"As a resolution of the Garrett Lee Smith Memorial Act, SAMHSA works with state and local governments, communities and tribes/tribal organizations to stem the number of juvenility suicides in our country," said Dr. Broderick. "These new grantees will avail fill a significant demand in their communities."
Nationally, an estimated 900,000 youth had made a plan to commit suicide during their worst or most late episode of major depression, and 712,000 attempted suicide during such an episode. The data ar from SAMHSA's National Survey on Drug Use and Health, which asked youth ages 12-17 about symptoms of great Depression, including thoughts about last or suicide.
The total approximate amount for the grant award period, which ranges from one to trey years, is $16 million. First-year financial support totals nearly $6 trillion. Continuation of these awards is subject to both availability of funds and progress achieved by awardees.
The grants proclaimed today will be administered by SAMHSA's Center for Mental Health Services and will be awarded to the following organizations:
Gila River Behavioral Health Authority Youth Suicide Prevention Project, The Gila River Indian Community, Sacaton, Ariz. -- $496,889 for the first year to provide suicide prevention and intervention services through Saving Lives for Tomorrow.
Omaha Nation Community Response Team - Project Hope, Walthill, Neb. -- $500,000 for the first year to make on prior suicide prevention efforts in order to develop and implement a tribal youth suicide prevention initiative, grounded in strong partnerships and collaborations.
Mescalero Apache School Youth Suicide Prevention and Early Intervention Initiative,
Mescalero, N.M. -- $432,282 for the first class to implement and pass judgment a comprehensive early intervention and self-annihilation prevention model.
Wiconi Wakan Health & Healing Center, Rosebud Sioux Tribe, Rosebud, S.D. -- $477,570 for the first year to establish the Wiconi Wakan Health & Healing Center, a place to enforce the Tribal Youth Suicide Prevention and Early Intervention Project Plan.
Circle of Trust Youth Suicide Prevention Program, The Confederated Salish Kootenai Tribes of the Flathead Indian Nation, Pablo, Mont. -- $166,667 for the first yr to apply a prevention project that will include both CSKT members and nonmembers.
Preserving Life: Nevada Tribal Youth Suicide Prevention Initiative, Inter-Tribal Council of Nevada, Sparks, Nev. -- $500,000 for the first year to reenforcement, expand, and enhance self-annihilation prevention efforts within the communities of the Nevada Tribes by implementing goals in the three areas of interest of the Indian Health Service Suicide Prevention Plan--Awareness, Interventions, and Methodology.
Youth Suicide Prevention, The Crow Creek Sioux Tribe, Ft. Thompson, S.D. -- $450,390 for the starting time year to enhance the Tribe's self-destruction prevention strategies and meet the objectives of its suicide prevention plan.
Tribal Youth Suicide Prevention Program, Oglala Sioux Tribe, Pine Ridge, S.D. -- $500,000 for the number one year to develop and implement a comprehensive and sustainable program to forbid suicide.
Wiconi Ohitika Project, Cankdeska Cikana Community College, Fort Totten, N.D. -- $485,857 for the first year to provide suicide prevention for the Spirit Lake Nation.
Sault Tribe Alive Youth (STAY) Project, Sault Ste Marie Tribe Chippewa Indians, Sault Ste Marie, Mich. -- $500,000 for the first year to ferment with tribal and non-tribal stakeholders to develop and implement a broad-based, culturally competent self-annihilation prevention and early intercession program.
Bering Strait Suicide Prevention Program, Kawerak, Inc., Nome, Alaska -- $500,000 for the first year to assist villages in developing prevention strategies through capacity building, breeding, training, and strong interdisciplinary collaboration and elder counselling.
Native Youth Suicide Prevention Project, Native American Rehabilitation Association, Portland, Ore. -- $500,000 for the first year to expand and strengthen youth self-destruction prevention networks.
Additional grants will be awarded this year for suicide prevention efforts under the Garrett Lee Smith program.
SAMHSA is a public health agency within the Department of Health and Human Services. The agency is responsible for improving the accountability, capability and effectualness of the nation's means abuse prevention, addictions discussion, and mental health services delivery system.

Young Knives at V Festival: 'We're bigger than God'
Young Knives played an early-evening show at the Chelmsford leg of the V Festival tonight (August 17), during which they joked that they were "Bigger than God".
Taking the Virgin Mobile Union stage at 7:35pm (BST), the ring played crowd-pleasers including 'She's Attracted To', 'Turn Tail' and 'The Decision'.
The Oxford-based outfit were dressed in dashing dinner party jacket garb, complete with bow ties. Drummer Ollie Askew had recently sheared his previously-large beard to a swell moustache and chin-strip jazz band while singer/guitarist Henry Dartnell sported redness braces.
After playing opener 'Terra Firma' bassist The House Of Lords joked about his band's stature. 'We're the biggest band in the reality," he stated. "We're larger than this festival. We're bigger than God."
Dartnell later dedicated 'The Decision' to the said bassist, wHO is his brother. THOL then bigged-up Girls Aloud, who played at the festival today. "I don't know what it is about them I wish, it must be their music," he said.
The ring upped the ante of the gig after playing soon-to-be-released single 'Dyed In The Wool', welcoming a cello player and deuce violinists on stage to accompany them for 'Turn Tail'.
The three-piece ended their set with an drawn-out version of 'She's Attracted To', which they dedicated to Virgin mogul Richard Branson, "because of his great choice of pickles".

Contemporary jazz keyboardist, composer and producer Philippe Saisse was born in Marseilles and raised in Paris; the boy of a staff producer at CBS/Sony France, he studied piano, euphony theory and composing at the Paris National Conservatory, winning Boston's Berklee College of Music's prestigious Paul Winter Scholarship upon graduating in 1975. At Berklee, Saisse became the protege of vibist Gary Burton, prima to a tenure performing behind Narada Michael Walden; he made his recorded debut on Al DiMeola's 1979 effort Splendido Hotel, and in addition to jazz likewise expanded into pop session work with appearances on David Bowie's Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps), Chaka Khan's I Feel for You and the Rolling Stones' Pestiferous Work. Saisse too earned notice writing corporeal for DiMeola, Al Jarreau (for whom he too co-produced the 1988 LP Heart's Horizon) and David Sanborn; he to boot served as the melodious director on the Sanborn-hosted TV series Night Music. In 1988 Saisse signed to Windham Hill to firing his solo debut, Valerian; it was septenary days before the followup, Masques, appeared on Verve Forecast. Side by side Voyage followed in 1997, and deuce days later he resurfaced with Halfway Till Dawn.

Big Brother: Blind Contestant Mikey Hughes 5-1 Favorite To Win
Scottish Mikey, the first blind contestant to enter the house, surprised his housemates by revealing he loves doing stand-up comedy while wearing fishnet stockings.
"I've got a massive collection of stockings - all types, colours, you name it. I just love wearing them," he said.
He also said that telling jokes satisfied his love of being the centre of attention and told how he did not like to "play the blind card" in order to win people over.
Mikey, 33, made his way into the house using a stick and with the help of a Big Brother assistant.
He immediately chatted with fellow Scot Dennis McHugh, who straight-away recognized Mikey's Scottish accent.
Dennis, a dancer from Edinburgh, asked Mikey if he was from Glasgow, explaining to the others that there was an "east-west thing" in Scotland. But Mikey assured him: "We'll get on fine".
Radio producer Mikey -- who lost his sight completely at 23 after an operation to reattach the retina in his right eye -- hopes to change public perceptions of blind people by taking part in the show.
He explained, "I've interviewed a wide variety of people including politicians, celebrities and eminent eye surgeons.
"But the people I want to make a difference to most are the blind and partially sighted people who face challenges every day, whether it is the latest eye treatment, job opportunities or discrimination."
Mikey is now 5-1 favorite with bookmakers Ladbrokes to win.
